Utterly relaxed

We arrived into Athens on Monday afternoon just in time to catch a few open sights. Greece, like many countries in Europe, is almost desolate on Sundays as this is a time for family and rest. Alan took us around the city showing us points of interest but overall Athens is not very aesthetically pleasing. I suppose this is a well known fact about Athens so most people visiting are there to see things like the Acropolis, some of the ruins, ancient and present Greek museums, and the temple of Zeus rather than walking through to experience local life. On Monday, we arrived in time to get into the Acropolis. It was 12€ to get in so many of us decided to walk to a point nearby and capture photos with the Acropolis in the background rather than going inside. It was a stunning view!

Oh I almost forgot... On our way to Athens we made a quick stop to see the Corinth canal which is the meeting point of the Ionian Sea and the Aegean Sea. We stood atop a 70 meter bridge looking down at the combing of the two seas and it was beautiful but slightly scary. It was so high! I'm not a huge fan of bridges as it is but this one in particular made me quite uncomfortable. We stood there long enough to watch a few people who were bungee jumping and take some photos then proceeded on our route to Athens.

On Tuesday morning we had to be up at 5am in order to catch our 7am ferry to Mykonos. We picked up two new people for our tour on Monday night and between their excitement for starting the tour and ours to finally be going to Mykonos you would never have guessed we were up at such an awful hour (it is really 4am to us because Greece is an hour ahead of the rest if Europe). We were dancing and singing on the bus all the way to the ferry! We spent 5 hours on the ferry and most of us were all sprawled across the floor and sleeping for the majority of the trip. I wish I would have gotten a picture of everyone because it looked like a giant slumber party with 36 people and their belongings inhabiting one giant corner of the ship.

Alan warned us that our sleeping accommodations in Mykonos weren't very nice but that the location and the views of our campsite would make up for it. He was 100% right. Our rooms looked like the medical tents I've seen when watching episodes of MASH with Dad! Our set up was very simple with 5 cots inside and we didn't have any air conditioning, but the view from our room was amazing! Here is Amanda being silly when I was trying to take a pic of our room and me with the view from our room at sunset. The last one is the view during the day.

The campsite was right off the beach and had an adjacent pool that overlooked the Aegean Sea. The breeze from the sea was perfect and offset the heat perfectly so most of the time we just woke up early to get out of our ridiculously hot tents and went to the pool to take delicious morning and afternoon naps. The best thing was they played this really laid back music and had bean bag chairs and cool whicker furniture, creating the perfect setting for sunbathing.

The beach was even more intoxicating than the pool. We lucked out with the most amazing weather and got two spend to whole days relaxing under the sun and shade.

Amanda, Romy, and I swam out to some rocks just off the shore of the beach to get some pictures and sunbathe. The water was quite frigid so once we got there it took us a while to venture back to shore.

This last one is of me under water when we were swimming back to shore. I'm not a giant fan of this picture of me but I still think the moment it captures is pretty cool!

Soooooo more on Mykonos... It's a town that doesn't have many sights. It is well known for it's night life, relaxing beaches, beautiful scenery, and windmills. To find the town and the windmills we had to take the public bus into "old town". We almost didn't make it because the pool and beach find a way to suck you in but yesterday we finally peeled ourselves off the bean bag chairs and I am SO glad we did! It was everything I thought Greece would be. Old town was filled with cute side streets, amazing little cafes and shops, Greek culture, and stunning views. Almost all of the town was all blue/ turquoise and white. We only found one little area where we found red houses and it stuck out like a sore thumb.

Amanda and I spent the day with one of the new girls that joined the tour. Her name is Emily and she is really awesome. The three of us had a blast together! We wandered the streets as Amanda and I usually do and enjoyed absorbing the city. We found the windmills and then had lunch at the cutest little restaurant right on the water called Katarina's. I got a Greek salad and it was so fresh and delicious. Oh yeah, I forgot to tell you guys...since I've been here I have been trying all kinds of foods I generally never eat and now I like be tomatoes. Yay!!!!

After lunch we made our way back to our campsite to spend our final evening in Mykonos and to also say goodbye to 5 more members of our group. We actually lose another 5 people tomorrow morning as well so we will having another farewell party tonight. Tomorrow we are off to Meteroa then Kavala which will mark our final two nights in Greece! :( I am very sad that our time in Greece is quickly coming to an end; however, I am super excited about our next country, Turkey! Oh, by the way, tomorrow will be day 24 on tour which marks the exact half way point of the trip! I can't believe it's going by so fast.

Love,

Lindsay
